Coronal Mass Ejections
نویسنده
چکیده
A coronal mass ejection (CME) is an eruption of billions of tonnes of magnetically charged plasma from a star’s corona. The material ejected is sent into interplanetary space where it eventually dissipates. Should the material collide with a planet then that planet’s electro-magnetic field would be temporarily disrupted. If the Earth’s electro-magnetic field were disrupted by a large CME then power distribution grids and global communications could be disrupted causing mass power outages worldwide. Such events are rare but have had notable affect. Possibly the most well known example of this was during the Summer of 1859 when the combination of solar flares, sun-spots, and a massive CME impacting the Earth caused telegraph wires in the United States and Europe to spontaneously short and become non-functional.

Solar Mini-Dimming Kinematics and Their Positive Correlations with Coronal Mass Ejections and Prominence
Solar mini-dimmings can be detect in the Extreme Ultra-Violet coronal eruptions. Here, sequences of 171_A images taken by Solar Dynamic Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembaly on 13 June 2010 are used. In this special day, both of coronal mass ejection and prominence were observed. The average velocities and accelerations of 500 mini-dimmings which were detected using on feature based classif...
متن کاملInitiation of Coronal Mass Ejections in a Global Evolution Model
Loss of equilibrium of magnetic flux ropes is a leading candidate for the origin of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The aim of this paper is to explore to what extent this mechanism can account for the initiation of CMEs in the global context. A simplified MHD model for the global coronal magnetic field evolution in response to flux emergence and shearing by large-scale surface motions is ...
متن کاملAnomalous-plasmoid-ejection-induced secondary magnetic reconnection: modeling solar flares and coronal mass ejections by laser–plasma experiments
The driving mechanism of solar flares and coronal mass ejections is a topic of ongoing debate, apart from the consensus that magnetic reconnection plays a key role during the impulsive process. While present solar research mostly depends on observations and theoretical models, laboratory experiments based on high-energy density facilities provide the third method for quantitatively comparing as...
متن کاملCoronal Mass Ejections at High Temperatures 3
We now have extensive X-ray (Yohkoh) and EUV observations of the behavior of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) at high temperatures in the lower corona. We also now have coronagraph observations from space with which to make identiications of the related phenomena. This paper reviews theories and observations of CMEs in this new context.

The twin Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) COR2 coronagraphs of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) provide images of the solar corona from two view points in the solar system. Since their launch in late 2006, the STEREO Ahead (A) and Behind (B) spacecrafts have been slowly separating from Earth at a rate of 22.5 degrees per year. By the end o...
